Wendy Protheroe(to be DG in 2018/19)

Rotary Club of Brisbane High Rise

Wendy began her career as a special education teacher where she developed her belief   that everyone should be given the chance to enjoy their abilities. Then as Director of Early intervention Services she worked with terminally ill children and their families and learnt the importance of being flexible in understanding differences and keeping end goals in mind.

As her children reached adolescence Wendy extended her career and spent seven years as TAFE Director at Gympie/Sunshine Coast and then Ipswich before being transferred to the Government’s Economic Development Portfolio. During that role she became the Queensland Director for the 2000 Olympic Games where she honed skills of working with high profile business, sports people and politicians, making focussed decisions and working to deadlines.

Back in Brisbane Wendy was General Manager of BoysTown Counselling Services with responsibilities across Australia for a decade that included Kids Helpline, Parentline, Family and Domestic Violence Refuges, Homeless accommodation, Parenting programs and staff training. Her Board and Committee positions focussed on areas of youth mental health, technology and wellness, trauma and grief counselling and forced marriage.

Wendy has represented Australia and Queensland internationally and loves the challenge of working across cultures.

In 2010 Wendy became a member of the Rotary Club of Brisbane High Rise for the opportunity to extend vocational networks, enjoy fellowship with like-minded people and the chance to be involved in sustainable service projects.

At High Rise Wendy has served as President and as a Board member responsible for the strategic plan, club visioning, program development, fellowship and major project facilitation. She was active in the Club receiving a global grant and further fundraising towards the refurbishment of the Mamba School in Tanzania. In 2013, with a group of High Risers she visited both Mamba and St Jude’s where she sponsors Emmy.

Wendy received a Paul Harris Fellow recognition from the Rotary Club of Brisbane High Rise and holds colleagues in her Club as role models in striving to live the model of service above self.

At District level Wendy has been Assistant Governor for the Brisbane cluster and acts as mentor for Rotaractors. This past year, as well as participating with the GETS (Governor Elect) team on the District Board and the District Consultative Committee she has been active in the areas of Youth Exchange, RYLA, Grants committee and is a Peace Fellow counsellor.

At Zone 8 level she has attended the Future Leaders Seminar, 2015 and 2016 Institutes, Success Conference and during the past year participated in a National Rotary Communications Workshop and Training for District insurance Officers with Rotarians from across Australia.

Wendy has attended Rotary Conventions in Sydney, Seoul and Atlanta.

At the heart of her life are her children and grandchildren. Brad and Kalie and their boys Zane and Jet; Tamsin and Tim and their children Sophia and Lachlan; Carlie and Mehendhi and their children Maleeka, Mohsin and Taariq. She’s a very proud mother and Nonna.

Wendy encourages all Rotarians to live to the adage you never know what you can’t do till you try” Thanks to the vision of Sir Clem Renouf we’re well on the way to proving that through the eradication of polio from our world.
