Community support for Rotary and local business sponsorship has contributed to many projects in local, national and international communities.

The most obvious local project at this time of the year for the Rotary Club of Ashgrove/The Gap is The Gap Region Instrumental Primary Performers School (GRIPPS), made possible through the sponsorship of many local businesses.

The joint Ashgrove/The Gap Rotary Club and local schools initiative began in 1992 and has grown to be a very exciting and successful annual event.

GRIPPS presents young musicians with an opportunity to develop their musical skills and showcase them to their community in a concert this year at The Gap State High School on Thursday 16 September, 2010

Around 160 children from 13 state and private schools in The Gap/Ashgrove area and surrounding suburbs are selected after a comprehensive auditioning process.

Music and instrumental teachers from many of the schools will join with 15 professional musicians to work with the students and hone their skills, during a four day music camp at The Gap State High School.

Following the camp, students perform every year to a packed house at The Gap State High School auditorium.

Anyone, who has experience one of the concerts, will attest to the outstanding quality of performance that the students achieve during the four day camp.

All members of the community are welcome to attend.

Rey Vitalla (13) was brought from the Phillippines by ROMAC (Rotary Oceania Medical Aid for Children) for treatment for a birth defect, two Tessier facial clefts, at Brisbane’s Wesley Hospital
He arrived in Brisbane from Manilla via Melbourne on 7th October 2009 with his guardian Santos Nueva, and a support doctor, Gay Ardanas, and underwent his first operation to reposition the displaced portion of his mid-face on 13th October, after a program of evaluation.
The operation involved many medical practitioners led by Dr John Arvier, a maxillo-facial surgeon at the Wesley. Rey then returned to the Phillippines about two weeks after the surgery.
He arrived back in Brisbane on 29 January, with his mother Virgie and Dr Ardanas, for further surgery on 6 February. This second operation to repair his hard and soft palate, top jaw, eyelids, cheeks, top lip, and nose involved five surgeons, three anaesthetists, and a team of theatre nurses and a bevy of other medical practitioners who gave their time for free to monitor and address various aspects of the operation that fell into their medical field, including the significant blood loss in a relatively small boy.
Some of the doctors, and others, remained with their patient during the total 13 hours of the operation.
As he awoke, and during subsequent support procedures over the following days, Dr Gay Ardanas was able to minimise his distress by explaining what was happening.
All can be proud of what was achieved, including those Rotarians who looked after Rey’s mum during a long day.
Companies that service the Wesley also lent their expertise. The biomodel provided by the team at Anatomics was invaluable. LMT/National Surgical Solutions donated the skeletal anchors for the soft tissue anchorage and Stryker donated the maxillo-facial titanium plate fixation. Southern Cross Radiology and Sullivan & Nicolaides once more waived all costs for x-rays and pathology services, including blood transfusions from Red Cross.
However, no riveting medical story would be complete without complications. For Rey this came when his left lung collapsed on the second day post-operation. Once again, the medical team swung into action using a positive-pressure face mask and some chest-physio to bring about a steady improvement. By late afternoon Rey’s chest x ray was back to normal, the facial swelling was starting to resolve, and he was sitting up in bed and taking a few sips of water.
By day four, Rey was up and walking, with help from physios, despite bone being taken from his hip four days previously. He was discharged from the Wesley the next day back to his host family at Wynnum.
He will remain in Brisbane for some weeks for several minor follow-up procedures, and lots of intensive speech exercises as he adjusts to the feel of a new mouth and lip structure.
A paediatrician, a urologist, and Queensland’s Rotary Medical Director Dr. Rob Justo (paediatric cardiologist) also provided further specialist input over the last few days.
By day four, Rey was up and walking, with help from physios, despite bone being taken from his hip four days previously. He was discharged from the Wesley the next day back to his host family at Wynnum, where Brisbane’s Philipino community have been and are, very supportive.
Then it was time to be measured for a prosthetic eye, which was fitted on 2 February.
He remained in Brisbane for some weeks for several minor follow-up procedures, and lots of intensive speech exercises as he adjusted to the feel of a new mouth and lip structure.
Rey has now returned to the Phillipines and a new life.

Polio has declined this year compared to 2009, both in terms of the number of cases and geographic restriction.
Fifty-six cases have been reported year-to-date, compared to 231 cases for the same period in 2009, and progress has been particularly strong at curbing type 1 in traditional reservoir areas such as northern Nigeria (one type 1 case this year nationwide) and northern India (three type 1 cases this year nationwide). Geographically too, polio is on the decline. Last year at this time, 69 districts were affected by polio, compared with 39 districts this year.
Multi-country synchronized outbreak response campaigns in west Africa are continuing, as the outbreak which had in 2009 affected the entire region appears to have been cornered to the westernmost part (Senegal and Mauritania). See ‘west Africa’ section below for more.
The progress achieved in Nigeria and resulting decline in polio is also having benefits to populations in neighbouring Niger. Niger has in previous years been affected by repeated virus importations from Nigeria. However, as a result of ongoing high-quality SIAs in Niger, and decline in virus transmission in Nigeria, no new cases have been reported in Niger since May 2009.

The Rotarians Against Malaria project, working mainly in Papua New Guinea, East Timor and The Solomon Islands, through an ‘Adopt a Village’ program where every member of that village receives an insecticide treated bed net, is aiming to expand its project over the next five years so that everyone in those areas receive a bed net, even in the remotest village.
The supply of these $10 bed nets has reduced the incidence of malaria in the adopted villages by up to 80% and maternal deaths by up to 30%.
RAM may receive research assistance! Researchers have found an enzyme that may prove an effective target for future anti-malarial drugs.
In collaboration with a multinational team, scientists at the Queensland Institute of Medical Research, including Associate Professor Don Gardiner, Dr Katharine Trenholme, and their team, have identified a new way to kill the parasites that cause malaria – a disease that kills over 1 million people every year.
DID YOU KNOW
Malaria has played a major role in history, from stopping Attila the Hun’s invading armies in Rome; to decimating British troops in Holland in 1809, leading to a victory for Napoleon; to causing the deaths of 60,000 U.S. troops (one out of seven deaths) during World War II.
Source: B.S. Kakkilya, Malaria Site: All about malaria, History of Malaria during Wars.
The World Health Organisation recognises 25 April as World Malaria Day, but as this coincides with Anzac Day in Australia, a very important national day of remembrance, 30 April has been selected as Malaria Awareness Day in Australia.
A list of “Rotary Day” celebrations are available on the PIRG Web page at www.rotary.org.

Rotary’s ShelterBox Response Team (SRT) dispatched 700 ShelterBoxes to Haiti on 15 January in response to the 12 January earthquake, directly from prepositioned stock in Curacao and El Salvador, ‘with even more to be packed before the end of the week.
Each ShelterBox contains a tent that will accommodate 10 people, together with blankets and/or mosquito netting, basic tools, cooking equipment, water purification tablets and even colouring books for the kids..
ShelterBox volunteers were among the first international relief workers to reach Haiti. SRT is a U.K. based disaster response organization supported by Rotary clubs worldwide. There are now around 5,000 ShelterBoxes in Haiti , enough to assist about 20,000 people, but firstly, targeting pregnant women and families with newborns, but as team member Mark Pearson said, “The walking wounded are everywhere.”
ShelterBox prioritised women and children providing tents, blankets, water containers, kitchenware and children’s packs – the basics to help set up the family unit.
“We worked really hard setting up tents in two separate hospitals that are having an immediate impact and saving lives. As soon as the tents are up at the hospitals there are patients moving into them,” Mark said.
Nearly 1,500 of the walking wounded have been treated by 23 physicians volunteering with Comprehensive Disaster Response Services, assisted by six volunteers from two New York City Rotary clubs.
Rotary requires around $1,200 funding to construct each ShelterBox. Thousands of ShelterBoxes have been dispatched to various disaster areas around the world in the past year, such as Malawi, Myanmar, Phillippines, Samoa and Sumartra.

The Maleny Rotary Club says thank you! Donations from the Club’s street collection raised a staggering $1239.40 in just 4 hours.
This amount together with another $1200 donation from Quota International of Maleny means that two more ShelterBoxes can be supplied for the region.

These ShelterBoxes are often the first kind of assistance that people receive in areas stricken by natural disasters so it is important to have stocks available ready to be despatched.

ShelterBoxes enroute

All boxes purchased are given a number so that their ultimate location can be advised back to donors. When the Maleny boxes arrive in a disaster location the Rotary Club of Maleny will make sure that this is publicised so that everyone who generously contributed will know where they are bringing desperately needed support.

The appeal continues, so anyone who wishes to donate for ShelterBox can do so by cheque to Rotary Club of Maleny at PO Box 70, Maleny. A tax receipt for donations of $10 or more can be issued onCommunity
